Lightning in a thundercloud
Put in context

Weather is not climate.

A thunderstorm does not prove a climate trend. A hot day does not disprove one either. Observation and statistics answer different questions.

Photographs are excellent at capturing a moment. For long-term statements, however, we need measurement series, comparison periods and clear definitions.

Two levels, both important

Weather describes the current or short-term state of the atmosphere. Climate describes statistical properties over longer periods. We experience one directly; we recognise the other by bringing many observations together.
